The trend worldwide tends to substitute soft binders with harder grades, more adapted to sustain heavy traffic and high service temperatures. This paper focuses on the presentation of features and benefits of using 40/50 through case studies from two heavy-duty highway projects in Vietnam.
ADCo is involved in the rehabilitation of a 32-km segment of Highway 13, an important heavy-duty traffic road located in Southern Vietnam, connecting Ho Chi Minh to Cambodia. The road pavement was initially constructed in 2012. However, after 8 years of service under heavy traffic, the existing asphalt pavement started to show serious structural problems and rutting.
ADCo, has been involved in the rehabilitation of a 32km segment of Highway 13 by using Cold in-place recycling technique with EcoStab® (ADStab®) emulsion for an important Heavy-duty traffic road. The Cold-in place recycling technique has been selected as the client was looking for a cost-effective solution that allows to re-use 100% of the in-situ materials with minimum disturbance to the traffic.
On November 14th 2024, Tipco Asphalt Public Company Limited (Tipco Asphalt) and University of Transport and Communications (UTC) signed Memorandum of Understanding for Academic Collaboration (MOU), with the aim to develop low-carbon footprint solutions for Vietnam's transport infrastructures with a focus on greenhouse gas emissions reduction, conservation of natural resources, and sustainability. The collaboration also aims to achieve higher excellence in academics, technology, and innovation.
At the seminar "Sustainable and Cost-effective Road Solutions" held on June 19th, 2024, in Ho Chi Minh City, Scientists, representatives of management agencies, and contractors all agreed that the application of sustainable solutions in road construction and maintenance is an inevitable trend that needs to be expanded at large scale in Vietnam road projects. Especially, at the COP26 Conference, Vietnam made a statement to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. The Prime Minister also issued Decision No. 876 dated July 22nd, 2022, on green energy transition, carbon and methane emissions reduction from the transportation sector.
The National Highway 5 is a strategic link from Hanoi to the port city of Hai Phong, carrying one of the busiest and heaviest traffic of Vietnam. The new construction of flyover on HW5A Hai Duong area will support the decongestion of traffic while accommodating the increase of goods transport between the two cities. ADCo has been involved in providing high performance asphalt solutions for this new flyover construction on HW5A to sustain heavy duty traffic with high rutting resistance. The solution consisted in paving a 6cm surface course asphalt mix manufactured with Colflex® PG82, a high-performance modified bitumen with enhanced workability, capable to resist to extreme solicitations (both in terms of traffic and climate). Thanks to its outstanding characteristics, the high durability of Colflex® PG82 binder allows significant reduction in pavement maintenance costs while providing more flexibility to the contractor through a wider range of working temperatures during construction.
On October 24th , 2024 in Hanoi, the University of Transport and Communications organized the 5th International Conference on Sustainability in Civil Engineering. This is a large, prestigious international conference held every 2 years, gathering many leading scientists from France, Germany, Canada, China, Korea, Japan, etc.
Following the success of previous field trips, on 24thOctober 2023, ADCo welcomed 30 students, Faculty of Engineering, University of Transport and Communications (UTC) to visit Hai Phong Depot. This is a useful activity, equipping the students with knowledge and practical experiencethat helps them gain a deeper understanding of asphalt materials and asphalt products such as Polymer Modified Bitumen, emulsion… as well as future career development directions.
A company trip is an effective connection channel through which businesses and schools meet and develop relationships to achieve a common goal. Moreover, a field trip creates a favorable environment for students to gain practical knowledge and skills—an important foundation for career development. To continue the series of company trips for students of the University of Transport, on November 10, 2020, we were happy to welcome students from Class K58_DB02 to visit the ADCo-Hai Phong depot.
In October 2020, Central Vietnam in general and Chan May Terminal, in particular, were hit by four consecutive storms that caused damage to people, including ADCo employees living and working in this area. Immediately, the company leaders urged everyone to donate and share the difficulties of their colleagues. The total amount raised amounted to US$ 10,894 (equivalent to VND 252,632,000). The representatives of ADCo also organized a visit to 12 families of ADCo employees who suffered from storm damage.
ADCo/Tipco applied Microsurfacing technique on HW21B which has intensive traffic with speeds up to 80km/h and heavy vehicles to extend the service life of the road a couple of years, restore the skid resistance while protecting the pavement from moisture and improve the traffic safety
Watercon® is a high-performance water-reactive storable cold mix asphalt of ADCo that reacts with water to develop strength. It consists of aggregate and a special emulsion binder developed by ADCo. When Watercon® comes into contact with water, it immediately reacts and forms high mechanical strength for emergency road repairs in harsh conditions such as heavy loads, and high traffic density in rainstorm weather. It is used for Road surface repairs, Filling technical trenches, Sealing around light poles, manholes, etc.
Using emulsified asphalt prime (EAP) complying with TCCS 27:2019/ TCĐBVN to replace cutback asphalt and asphalt emulsion CSS-1 for prime coat in the asphalt concrete pavement structure is the trend around the world because of environmental and safety reasons and improving penetration quality. However, in Vietnam, the use of EAP for prime coat layer is still uncommon.
Microsurfacing using EcoGrip® (cationic quick-setting polymer-modified emulsion from ADCo) shows good performance even after over 1 year of service. The skid resistance and macrotexture are stable, and the pavements do not show any signs of cracking or shoving.
ADCo is launching a high-performance water-reactive cold mix asphalt for permanent road repairs in harsh environments (wet, humid, heavy traffic) inspired by one of the Colas products portfolios named “Watercon®”, which has been developed and used globally.
On June 6th 2023, Asphalt Distribution Company Limited (ADCo) cooperated with The University of Da Nang – University of Science and Technology (UD-DUT) and Da Nang Bridge and Road Association to hold the seminar "Asphalt Solutions for Road Maintenance” at Novotel Hotel, Da Nang City. Attending the seminar, the Organizing Committee was honored to welcome the representatives of Ministry of Transport, Vietnam Road Department, Regional Management Unit No.3, and representatives of local Departments of Transport, the Project Management Units, Consulting companies and contractors, close customers of ADCo; the experts, doctoral professors of Faculty of Construction, Bridge and Road at the University of Transport and Communications (UTC), The University of Da Nang – University of Science and Technology (UD-DUT).
On May 20th, the University of Transport and Communications (UTC) in collaboration with Wirtgen Group (Germany) and Asphalt Distribution Company Limited hosted a seminar on "Recycling Technology of Asphalt Concrete Pavement at Mobile Mixing Plant for Road Maintenance and Repairing".
On October 4th, 2024 in Hanoi, the Institute of Transport Science and Technology (ITST) held an annual scientific conference to celebrate its 68th anniversary, in line with the general trend of the transport industry, which is to deploy new technologies and materials to meet the increasingly high requirements of projects, while at the same time, develop sustainable technologies to achieve net zero emissions by 2050 as set by the Government.
