EcoStab® - First Cold in-place Recycling project in Vietnam

ADCo, a subsidiary of Tipco asphalt in Vietnam, Colas’ partner in Asia, supplied all the bituminous binders for the first in-place recycling project in Vietnam.

ADCo is involved in the rehabilitation of a 32-km segment of Highway 13, an important heavy-duty traffic road located in Southern Vietnam, connecting Ho Chi Minh to Cambodia. The road pavement was initially constructed in 2012. However, after 8 years of service under heavy traffic, the existing asphalt pavement started to show serious structural problems and rutting.

After several attempts to repair the road, the Toll Road Operator decided to perform deep structural rehabilitation of their pavement. The Cold In-Place Recycling technique was selected since the client was looking for a cost-effective solution that allows 100% re-use of the in-situ materials with minimum disturbance to the traffic.

The work consists of the following:

  • Cold In-Place Recycling: Treatment depth of 15–20 cm using EcoStab® emulsion specifically designed by ADCo for the project
  • Curing layer: Single-layer surface dressing to protect the recycled layer while waiting for the final overlay
  • Tack Coat: Cationic polymer-modified emulsion
  • Leveling & Surface course: Hot mix asphalt.

EcoStab® is a cationic slow-setting emulsion (CSS-1h, ASTM D2397) specially formulated to provide perfect coating, ensure high mechanical performance of the recycled material, and facilitate immediate opening to traffic.

Nearly 1,000 MT of emulsion has been supplied for the Highway 13 project, a great achievement that will contribute to the development of Cold In-Place Recycling in Vietnam.
